On Friday, March 7, the 2007 Barr Engineering Environmental Research Center Outstanding Student Publication Awards were announced. The award was made possible by a donation by Barr Engineering, and will be awarded annually to the students publishing the most outstanding peer-reviewed journal publication in each calendar year. The awards are voted on by all of the ERC faculty investigators.
Craig Adams, Director of the Environmental Research Center, noted that “This is a great way to recognize and emphasize the importance of the scholarly achievements of the student researchers in the Environmental Research Center at Missouri S&T.” In addition to having their names and paper on a plaque in Butler Carlton Hall, the students receive a framed certificate and a check for $250, $150 or $50 for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, respectively.
Two papers tied for first place. Dr. Muriel Auriol won first place for her paper in Water Research titled ” Laccase-catalyzed Conversion of Natural and Synthetic hormones from a Municipal Wastewater” with co-authors Youssef Filali-Meknassis, Rajeshwar D. Tyagi, and Craig Adams. Dr. Maneerat Ongwandee also won first place for her paper pubished in Colloids and Surfaces titled “Adsorption of Trimethylamine on Zirconium Silicate and Polyethylene Powder Surfaces” with co-authors Glenn C. Morrison, Xiaowen Guo, and Charles C. Chusuei
Two papers tied for third place. The first was by Dr. Justin Sutherland who published “Determination of Hydroxyl Radical Rate Constants for Fuel Oxygenates,” in Environmental Engineering Science along with coauthor Craig Adams. Dr. Tian Wang also won a third place award for “The Leaching Characteristics of Selenium from Coal Fly Ashes,” in the Journal of Environmental Quality along with co-authors Jianmin Wang and Joel Burken
